Kathryn’s First Pattern

My relationship is competitive one. We love each other very much, we love hanging out together, we’re very sweet and kind to each other but when it comes to gift giving, It’s ON. I’ve always thought of myself as a decent gift giver, or at least one who tries her best. I had no idea how small […]

Twenty Minutes with Nature

I started a new project at the end of April. I was going to say “somewhere around the end of April” which would be stupid because this project is a daily, dated, drawing project. I started a new project on exactly April 25th which has become sort of my daily meditation. Basically I was getting […]

Holding On at Windrush Gallery

This piece was done for a very specific show. My Twitter friend (and now we’ve met in real life, friend) Cathy opened up a gallery at the end of May called Windrush Gallery in Metchosin. For her opening she invited artists of all skill levels to submit pieces around the theme of Mental Health. Partial […]

Colour, colour, colour

These pieces really demonstrate my push to try using more colour and more graphical elements in my birds. They were the last few gouache paintings before I started transitioning into acrylics for my experiments.

More bird experiements and underpainting

I’ve got a problem where my “style” rarely sticks. I’m always experimenting and rarely stay in the moment long enough before I move onto the next thing. Starting to think I need to hold myself to a series soon. Anyway I started experimenting here with gouache and the (typically) oil method “en grisaille” which is […]

Sometimes I draw people

I started a new sketchbook recently and started playing with brush pens again. You know, now that my sketchbook paper can handle it. Occasionally I go through people fazes. I used to almost always do people and human beings but I feel into animals and birds pretty hard a couple years ago so now it’s […]

Christmas Kitty

Merry Christmas! I don’t have any Christmas art because I’ve been busy doing Christmas art. Ha. Anyway here’s a Christmas present I painted today that I can share. Christmas kitty painting for some lovely people who just adopted a new kitten! I historically BLOW at cats so pretty pleased it turned out. I was terrified.

All my art is surprises

Problem with the holidays is while I’m producing steadily, I can’t show any of it off because they are gifts. That’s right, I’m THAT guy. The guy who makes gifts. Thought I should post something though so here are some recent field sketches and a painting I started sketching in October that I’m desperate to […]

Nathan Davis A great artist in Victoria, BC who is also credited with running the workshop where I learned how to weather and paint model train cars.

It’s a rainy Sunday so here’s a pink, downtown It’s a rainy Sunday so here’s a pink, downtown dream. Tag yourself? I’m the first bird in the window with terrible form who’s doing her best. But also my husband and BFF were like “the bird in the sunglasses and the skateboard is 100% you” which was flattering. My husband added “total poser though” which...is fair.

Winter vibes downtown. Drawing and painting busy s Winter vibes downtown. Drawing and painting busy scenes like this feels nostalgic and surreal now. Also makes my heart hurt. But time always seems slower when you’re stuck in the middle of it and one day we’ll be crowding together again like the disgusting social creatures we are. Except if you’re sick, no more of that going forward.

These kind of images aren’t their best on Instag These kind of images aren’t their best on Instagram but I haven’t done a pattern in awhile. So big deep mystery to this one. Just desperately clutching my warm drinks and asking them to make everything feel better. Coffee in the morning. Tea from 10am on. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it distracts me from my water which I really need so. You know. Hope everyone’s doing okay out there. What’s your comfort these days?

Who remembers this sketch I made before I went on Who remembers this sketch I made before I went on my burn-out vacation? I did and that’s all that matters haha. This was where I’ve been wanting to head with my little dailies when they aren’t dailies. There is a place for the sketch and the half-tone but I am a watercolour girl at heart both in what I enjoy doing and my taste so I was always going to gravitate back here eventually. That’s the thing with art, try everything and you’ll find yourself eventually drifting back time and time again to the thing you most love to do, if you have found it.
